This assessment will measure different aspects of fitness, the procedure for which is as follows:

. Screened before assessment to inform instructors of any medical or physical disabilities.
. Take blood pressure.
. Take heart rate.
. Measure height.
. Measure weight.
. Girth measurements - in this test the instructor takes measurements of different areas of the body i.e. chest, hips, thigh etc. The purpose is to monitor the progression of the client's weight resistance training programme. On reassessment, result of the girth measurement should have decreased.
. Measure body Composition - Body composition refers to identifying the fat & non-fat elements of body weight.
. Aerobic Test - 1 mile on treadmill
. Push-up test (optional)
. Curl-up test (optional)
. Flexibility test

Once the test is completed, the goals you want to achieve are discussed. A programme is then prescribed to help achieve these goals.

Skibbereen Sports Centre is located at the North East side of the town on the Cork Road of Skibbereen town. The Centre has a fully equipped gymnasium, a large multi purpose hall, racquetball court, three tennis courts and boule area. The sauna is also available and can be booked for individual use.

At Skibbereen Sports Centre membership of the gym is the only type of membership available. Tennis, racquetball, main hall and sauna can be used without being a member. Non members may also use the gym without having to pay a membership fee. All facilities need to be booked in advance to avoid not being able to use the facility.

Fitness Classes at Source Health and Fitness:

Spinning - A 45 minute aerobic cycle class, incorporating a sequence of jogging, sprinting, climbing, etc. Guaranteed to get your heart rate up! You take this class at your own level, thus enabling you to work your way from beginners level right through to advanced level. Places are limited, so booking is necessary.

ABS Class - This is a fifteen minute intensive class to help you tone up
your abdominal "stomach" muscles. These classes are free
and do not need to be booked.

Circuits - Hi-intensity, multi station class. Consisting of both aerobic
and weight stations. This is an intermediate to advanced
class. Beginners are advised to start with the Thursday class
and work their way up.

Aerob-tone - This class compromises of both aerobic and toning
techniques with emphasis on good posture, breathing
and toning - a great class to burn the calories.

Karate Class - We run a Karate club here in the centre every Monday and Thursday night between 8.00 - 9.30pm. Our instructor Paul Allen is a 6th Dan black belt and has been instructing Karate with us here for the last number of years. Karate is an excellent way of learning self defence, stamina and increasing self confidence and promoting mental well being. Our Karate club caters for those at any level of the discipline, men and women. Even if you are a complete beginner and have never done Karate before you could be well on your way to your first belt within the first few months.

You do not need to be a member of Source Health & Fitness to join the Karate club. So, if you are over 16 and are looking for a personal challenge, come along and see for yourself.

ABS Class - This is a fifteen minute intensive class to help you tone up
your abdominal "stomach" muscles. These classes are free
and do not need to be booked.

Intensive Toning - Intensive toning exercises for the bums, tums and thighs. An aerobic warm-up stretching sessions and weights routine to tone up the body.

Aqua Aerobics - This is a 45 minute class for all levels of fitness.
This is a non impact class based in the pool. This class is suitable for non swimmers

Aero-Circuit - A multi-station workout with emphasis on fat burning and muscular toning.

Teen-age Gym - This is aimed at 12-16year olds. It is a supervised introduction to the gym and our junior members get a realy good cardio-vascular workout as well as some great core stability training

Yoga - This is a 10 week course of Hatha Yoga, run by Catherine Cogan. This class combines of relaxation and breathing exercises to aid a stress free lifestyle. Places are limited so early booking is essential

Fitness Test - Every member that joins with Source Health and Fitness will receive a free fitness test from one of our highly qualified instructors. This test includes:
- Testing of respiratory, blood pressure, body fat, flexibility and heart rate.
- Also included is a fitness programme for 6 weeks. You must use the gym two to three times per week to see the best results. The instructors will monitor your progress over the weeks. They are always available for any questions you may have or any problems you are encountering.

Aerobics/Dance Studio
The Mardyke Arena contains 1 large spacious mirrored aerobics studio and a multi purpose studio both with a professionally sprung wooden floor. We have a wide range of classes and all our instructors are highly experienced and qualified.

Athletics Track
The Synthetic Athletics Track in the Mardyke is fully floodlit and is an 8 lane international standard athletics track. The Track has been host to the BUPA Ireland Cork City Sports for a number of years. The Track is managed by the Department of Physical Education & Sport University College Cork.

Fitness Gymnasiums
The Mardyke Arena boasts an extensive variety of exercise and fitness equipment. The equipment at the Arena is Life Fitness, one of the top brands worldwide.

Bouldering

Leading
The ‘Mardyke Peak' has a large leading and top roping section that enables climbers of all levels to test their skills. Spin Xpress - Spin Xpress is one of the most popular classes that we offer! These classes are great fun and are suitable for all levels of ability. Spin Xpress is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle. As you pedal, motivating music plays and our instructor talks you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout.
During the class you vary your pace -- sometimes pedaling as fast as you can, other times cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. Spinning burns serious calories and offers an awesome aerobic workout that makes your heart pump fast. It also tones your legs and outer thigh muscles.

Pilates - Pilates (pronounced Pi-lah-tees) is a system of body conditioning designed to strengthen and lengthen the body's muscles with emphasis on reducing incidence of back pain and injury. Pilates has long been associated with optimum fitness as well as injury rehabilitation and prevention, flexibility and increased physical performance. It tones and strengthens the muscles without impacting the joints. It improves posture and strengthens the parts of the body that age attacks, including the stomach muscles, inner thighs and upper arms.

Aqua - This is a low impact exercise class that takes places while standing in the swimming pool. In addition to the standard benefits of any exercise, the use of water in water aerobics supports the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint injury. The reduction of gravity by flotation places less stress on the joints when stretching, and can allow a greater range of motion. The resistance of the water helps to tone the muscles while performing the various exercises. This class is performed to music.

Abs ‘n Flex - This class is designed to target two areas – the abdominals and whole body flexibility. It consists of a series of exercises to strengthen and tone the core muscles, abdominals and lower back. Following this intense workout, we go through a series of stretches to target all the muscles of the body to ensure correct flexibility and to reduce the risk of injury. An ideal class for anyone involved in any sports or just needing to tone the and strengthen the core.

Kinesis - With the only Kinesis Studio in Munster, we are ideally equipped to provide a range of functional exercises, designed to replicate many of the day to day movements needed to live our lives or take part in a sport or recreational activity. The exercises and movements are designed to promote muscle balance and co-ordination. We can design an infinite variety of exercises and movements, ensuring strength, stability and flexibility.

Yoga - This is run as a course with the Indian Doctor from the Yauvana Spa. Normally run as an eight week course consisting of one hour a week. Please contact the Spa for details of prices and starting dates.

Bodyworx - This is an endurance type class designed to tone and sculpt all areas of the body. It is excellent for increasing lean body mass, improving muscle tone, and definition without causing bulking. Using a combination of the most up to date advances in group exercise classes and various equipment including barbells and steps, this class ensures an all over body workout and helps to sculpt the body.

The gymnasium and aerobics facilities at LeisureWorld Bishopstown is second to none in Cork. We possess over 50 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, a large range of resistance equipment, a free weights area and stretching area. The gymnasiums are always supervised with qualified staff that are on hand to help you achieve your fitness or weight loss goals.

The gym include the following areas:

Cardio-Vascular Gym - This gym contains the following equipment:

Treadmills: Used for strolling, walking, jogging and running

Reclined bikes: An exercise bike with a back support suitable for all types of clients especially those with back problems.

Upright bikes: A standard exercise bike with many different in built programmes.

Cross Trainers: Offers a cross training effect. A non weight bearing machine, so it places no stress on your joints

Steppers: Used to tone up the bum and strengthen the muscles in the legs. Just like stepping up & down a stairs

Rowing Machines: Used to strengthen leg muscles and improve posture.

Lifefitness Resistance Circuit - This circuit is equipped with top of the range Lifefitness Resistance machines, that allow every body part to be worked and toned in a safe and easy way. This circuit area makes a quick workout possible, and is used to run regular supervised circuits.

Technogym Plate loaded strength equipment – This range of resistance machines offer a safe and easy way for toning and strength development. It offers great variety and caters for the beginner or the advanced exerciser.

Free Weights Area - A Large selection of free weights, dumbbells, barbells, benches, squat racks, a full range to cater for all fitness and sports demands.

Stretching, Abs & Core Area - This is a large floor area that allows exercisers to stretch to work on flexibility, use Bosu & swiss balls to develop core muscles and stability, or use the large variety of medicine balls to exercise the abs.

Aerobics Studio – The large purpose built studio offers the perfect environment to exercise in. Spacious, bright and cool, the sprung floor is the perfect surface for all of the great classes available.

Spinning Studio – The Spinning studio has been designed to make the spinning class the most fun and enjoyable class you can go to. Great bikes, great music, bright and airy and the best instructors make it a great class.

Holistic Studio – This studio offers mood lighting and a real warmth, creating the perfect room to relax and chill out in. When Yoga, Pilates and other wellness classes take place in this room, it really does make the class very special.

Body Pump – This class is suitable for all levels, both Male & Female!! The fastest way to shape up & burn Body Fat during and after the class. Burn up to 600 calories per class for fat loss

On Your Bike – An exercise class suitable for all fitness levels (no impact or stress involved). This is a stationary cycling class focusing on a combination of movements & techniques (sprints, climbs & jogs) performed to motivating music which will give you a fantastic workout!!

Spin & Body Pump – This class incorporates the above movements & techniques and is suitable for intermediate to advanced participants. This class will give you a real challenge to your workout!

Running Club – An easy paced outdoor run. Go on test yourself away from the treadmill. A great run if your training for a relay team in the cork city marathon.

Lunchtime Circuits – A combination of aerobic, strength and toning stations. A workout packed with variety.

General Step – This is an easy to follow step class and is great for individuals who are new to stepping while experience steppers can incorporate power moves to increase the intensity.

Cardio Kickboxing – This is a six week course and each class is a high impact cardiovascular workout featuring a variety of punches, kicks, blocks etc. This class incorporates traditional exercises such as jumping jacks, abdominal work and toning exercises to create a total body workout.

Aqua Fit – This class is great for cardio conditioning & strengthening using water resistance. This is a fantastic & fun workout and caters for non-swimmers.

Aerokick/Kick & Tone - This class is broken down into easily defined sections. Thirty minutes of kickboxing moves followed by toning to firm you from head to toe using your body weight as resistance or light/heavy hand weights. This class is sure to get you in good shape and increase muscle strength.

Pilates – Increase your core strength & flexibility. Progressive workout over 6 weeks, toning & increasing strength in all areas. A strong core can help to prevent injuries and lower back problems.
